Pro - Democracy Movement In Thailand ============================= Thousands of protesters, many first-time participants in political rallies, gathered in Bangkok on August 16, 2020 - demanding change in a country where military tanks have tended to shape politics more than the ballot box has.The nearly eight-hour protest, which filled a broad avenue in the heart of the city with black-clad people, was the largest rally in Thailand since a coup in 2014, one of a dozen successful putsches in the country in the last nine decades. Anger among disaffected youth has been bubbling since before the March 2019 elections, which gave General-turned-Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha another four years in office. Protesters – who chanted, “Down with dictatorship, long live democracy” and “Stop harassing the people” – have called for the dissolution of the military-backed government. They have also demanded an end to the intimidation of activists and reforms to the constitution, which was written under military rule. Thailand’s lèse-majesté laws are among the strictest in the world. Criticising the king can lead to a jail sentence of up to 15 years, though Prayuth has said the king requested that it should not be used at the moment. Such laws also limit media reporting within the country that relates to the royal family. In recent weeks, students have voiced increasingly regarding direct criticisms of the monarchy, breaching a long-standing taboo. After the 2014 coup, the military-backed government promised that it would offer stability and allow Thailand to prosper. Such promises have not materialised and this had compelled many young people, including students of reputed university, to speak out. _________________________ "The poor are getting poorer, how can people without enough money afford good education. It is impossible." °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° ~ The Student Union of Thailand ~ ________________________________ The protesters' anger has been fueled by a multitude of injustices, which have derailed ingenuous lifestyles of the people. On top of frustration over the economy, which was struggling even before the coronavirus pandemic, students say they are fed up with a government they accuse of undermining democracy. Finally, The protests in Thailand are historic because this is the first time in Thailand's history that urban demonstrators have demanded such reforms. It is momentous to understand that, with a large group of demonstrators demanding monarchical reform, the cat is out of the bag for the first time, meaning that henceforth monarchical reform is a valid demand for Thai demonstrators. ============================= Pro - Democracy = Relating to political activism directed towards the establishment of democratic government in a country। Black - Clad = A tactic used by protesters who wear black clothing, ski masks. ============================ |
